- John L. Hennessy & David A. Patterson, "Computer Architecture : A Quantitive Approach", 2nd edition, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers Inc., 1996. ISBN 1-55860-329-8. (another really good book, successfully used for masters level RMIT DS466/DS740, 3rd edition released in 2002)
- David A. Patterson & John L. Hennessy, "Computer Organisation & Design : The Hardware / Software Interface", 2nd edition, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers Inc., 1998. ISBN 1-55860-491-X. (very good, used for JCU CP2005, actively maintained)
- Andrew Tanenbaum, "Structured Computer Organisation", 4th edition, Prentice-Hall, 1999. ISBN 0-13-020435-8. (used as a reference at RMIT)
- Kevin Skahill, "VHDL for Programmable Logic", Addison-Wesley Publishing (and Cypress Semiconductor), 1996. ISBN: 0-201-89586-2 (very good first text on VHDL)

- A.V. Oppenheim and R.W. Schafer, "Discrete-time signal processing", Prentice-Hall, 1989. ISBN 0-13-216771-9. (some people still like the 1975 version as well, successfully used in ADFA masters level course)
- J.G. Proakis and D.G. Manolakis, "Digital Signal Processing: Principles, Algorithms and Applications", 3rd edition, Prentice Hall, 1995. ISBN: 0133737624. (this is my current u/grad preferred DSP text, and the introduction to discrete time is very clearly presented)
- G. Zelniker and F.J. Taylor, "Advanced Digital Signal Processing - Theory and Applications", Marcel Dekker, 1994. ISBN 0824791452. (needed a little debugging in the first edition)
- The Mathworks, "The Student Edition of MATLAB, User Guide", Prentice-Hall. (various versions)(also good for application areas including Control Theory, Network Theory)
- S. M. Bozic, "Digital and Kalman filtering: an introduction to discrete-time filtering and optimum linear estimation", Arnold, 1979. ISBN 0713134100. (introductory text on digital filters and Kalman filtering is solid yet gentle)

- Tom Kelley, "The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design Firm", Tom Kelley with Jonathon Littman, Currency January-2001. ISBN-10: 0385499841. ISBN-13: 978-0385499842 (fantastic book, this text is what I would use for a rework of the team based innovation aspects of JCU CP3120)(links between ideas in this book and those in the Larman text [and even the RUP] would be worth exploring further)
- Martin Fowler, "Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code", Martin Fowler with contributions by Kent Beck, John Brant, William Opdyke, and Don Roberts, Addison-Wesley Professional; 1st edition (June 28, 1999). ISBN: 0201485672 (another VERY IMPORTANT TEXT, for both JCU CP3120 and CP3110)
- Brian W. Kernighan and Rob Pike, "The Practice of Programming", Addison-Wesley, 1999. ISBN 0-201-61586-X. (VERY VERY GOOD - ideas fed into RMIT DS472 and JCU CP2377)

- Gene H. Miller, "Microcomputer Engineering", Prentice-Hall, 1993 (ISBN 0135844754) and 2nd edition 1999 (ISBN 0-13-895368-6). (very good 68HC11 text, successfully used in RMIT Manufacturing Systems Engineering)
- Frederick F. Driscoll, Robert F. Coughlin, Robert S. Villanucci, "Data acquisition and process control with the M68HC11 microcontroller", Merrill/Macmillan International, 1994. ISBN 002330555X. (successfully used in RMIT Manufacturing Systems Engineering)
- Joseph L. Jones and Anita M. Flynn, "Mobile Robots: Inspiration to Implementation", A.K. Peters, Wellesley, Massachusetts, 1993. ISBN 1-56881-011-3. (just great for inspiring people, also great for 68HC11 users, you can get good ideas from here even if you're not using the 68HC11)
- Phillip Musumeci, "68HC11 Programmer's Reference Manual", Department of Computer Systems Engineering, RMIT, Melbourne, 1996. Available at JCU. (I guess this is OK but my latest uP notes are better)

- A.M. Noll, "Introduction to Telecommunication Electronics", Artech House Inc., Norwood MA, 2nd Edition, 1995. (1st edition successfully used in a telecommunications systems course for humanities students at ADFA)

- G. Reynolds, "Ethics in Information Technology", Thomson Publishing, October 2002. ISBN: 0-619-06277-0. (this text appears quite good)
Network Theory:
- F.F. Kuo, "Network Analysis and Synthesis", John Wiley. (students can skip the section on modern computer tools in this great 1960's text ... it is a very good book irrespective of age)
Operating System Studies:
- Andrew Tanenbaum and Albert Woodhull "Operating Systems Design and Implementation", Prentice-Hall, 1997. ISBN 0-13-630195-9. Notes: (1) This text includes a discussion of MINIX and comes supplied with a MINIX CD; (2) A.S. Woodhull maintains a Teaching with Minix Howto web site - seems very good; MINIX 3 is now publicly available under a BSD-like licence.
- Andrew Tanenbaum's "Modern Operating Systems", 2nd edition, Prentice-Hall, 2001. ISBN 0-13-031358-0 (cloth). [fairly good but maybe it could have had more material on modern UNIX].
- M.K. McKusick, K. Bostic, M.J. Karels, and J.S. Quarterman, "The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System", Addison Wesley, 1996. ISBN: 0-201-70245-2. (you read this if you want to understand the starting point for FreeBSD and NetBSD)
- Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, and Greg Gagne, "Operating System Concepts", 6th edition, John Wiley & Sons, 2001. ISBN 0-471-41743-2. [better than I expected, successfully used in JCU CP2002, has a teaching support web site]

BSD UNIX:
- Greg Lehey, "The Complete FreeBSD", published by Walnut Creek CDROM, June 1999. ISBN: 1-57176-246-9. Errata for the text is distributed on FreeBSD CD sets --- look at /book/errata. Errata is also available from ftp://www.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd, mirrored locally at http://mirriwinni.it.jcu.edu.au/~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/cfbsd. Greg Lehey lives in Adelaide, Australia. Note that due to the I.T. company shake out in the U.S.A., the publisher of this text has changed from Walnut Creek to BSDi to Wind River Systems to another entity that might be www.daemonnews.org (but I am not yet sure).
- Annelise Anderson, "FreeBSD - An Open-Source Operating System For Your Personal Computer", published by The Bit Tree Press, 2001. Paperback, 419 page book with CD #1, ISBN: 0-9812045-0-0. ISBN-13: 978-9868115859 (chosen for JCU CP3046 and CP3047 as a way to get adaptive and iterative development methodologies past traditionalists, very good technically :-)

- Jesse Liberty, "Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days", SAMS Publishing, 5th edition, 2004. ISBN-10: 0672327112 and ISBN-13: 978-0672327117 (also 4th Edition, 2001. ISBN: 067232072X). (I recommend this to students who need to study C++ without the benefit of lectures, and perhaps see also the on-line 2nd edition)

This is a gentle text aimed at the transition between high school and university (in the U.S., this book promotes Python as a replacement for C++ as a first programming language in high school).

- "Gutenberg Man of the Millennium - From a secret enterprise to the first media revolution", published by the City of Mainz, 2000, on the occasion of the sixth centenary of the birth of Johannes Gutenberg. [no ISBN, just like the works of Gutenberg, this fellow was really neat as is the museum in Mainz]
- Donald E. Knuth, "Digital Typography", CSLI Publications, Stanford, California, 1998. ISBN 1-57586-011-2. [Knuth invented computer typesetting, in my opinion, and has recently revised the Art of Programming - fantastic works]
